Online Betting Switzerland: Your Key Takeaways

Are you looking for international betting sites that cater to Swiss players? We've got you covered with our list of the best betting sites that offer an exceptional sports betting experience to Swiss punters.

Even though these sites don't have a Swiss sports betting license, they are still reliable and safe, as they are regulated by at least one governing body to ensure a fair and secure betting experience.

Our team is constantly searching for new bookmakers and we thoroughly test and review them before featuring them on our site. If the bookmaker is worth your time, you will find it listed here on Bookies Bonuses 🇨🇭.

8 things to know before betting in Switzerland

  1. Online betting is legal for all Swiss residents who are 18 years or older.
  2. The market is heavily regulated and only 2 state-owned betting sites, Swisslos and Loterie Romande, are authorised to offer sports betting services in Switzerland under the Gambling Act.
  3. International betting sites located outside of Switzerland are not licensed to operate in the country. Nevertheless, Swiss punters can still play on these sites without facing any legal consequences.
  4. We haven't heard of any reports of Swiss players being punished for registering and playing with foreign betting sites. However, if you have any doubts and want to be 100% sure, you should consult a lawyer before signing up and depositing funds.
  5. The Swiss government uses internet blockers to deny bettors access to foreign betting sites, in order to protect citizens from gambling addiction.
  6. However, many foreign betting sites still accept players from Switzerland. Some even offer welcome bonuses in CHF.
  7. Any profits you make while betting at international bookmakers need to be declared for taxes.
  8. Although payment blocking was discussed during the legislative process, it was not adopted by the parliament. Nevertheless, we advise using electronic wallets such as Skrill or Neteller as often as possible to be on the safe side.

International betting sites vs local betting sites

⭐️ Advantages of international betting sites:

  1. They frequently have enticing welcome bonuses, to attract players.
  2. They also often have bonuses for existing players, to keep them coming back.
  3. The odds are almost always higher for all outcomes of a match, meaning better value-for-money.
  4. You can more often than not find way more sports on international bookmakers.
  5. Some of them have more possible outcomes per event/match than traditional betting sites.

🚫 Disadvantages of international betting sites:

  1. Not licensed in Switzerland - the Swiss government cannot control anti-gambling addiction measures.
  2. You need to pay taxes on all your profits starting from 0 CHF up.

⭐️ Advantages of local, licensed betting operators:

  1. They have a Swiss license, which means they are regulated in Switzerland and can be more secure.
  2. You don't have to pay taxes on winnings up to 1000 CHF.
  3. They are easy to access, without the need for VPNs.

🚫 Disadvantages of local betting sites:

  1. Often offer worse odds for events.
  2. Not a large choice of sports, especially virtual sports, esports, or more niche sports.
  3. Not offering bonuses to newcomers.

Do international betting sites accept CHF?

Yes, some of them do, but not all.

It's no secret, the Swiss LOVE their francs, as the CHF is an incredibly strong currency that rarely loses value. That is why many players prefer to bet with Swiss francs and not convert them to Euros or other currencies.

Below is a list of betting sites in Switzerland, which accept and give out bonuses in Swiss francs.

Top 10 international betting sites that accept CHF

Wettigo: Bonus up to CHF 500

Bahigo: Bonus up to CHF 400 + CHF 100 in Free Bets

22Bet: Bonus up to CHF 122

Sportaza: Bonus up to CHF 220

Sultanbet: Bonus up to CHF 2,000

PlayZilla: Bonus up to CHF 150

Rabona: Bonus up to CHF 220

Excitewin: Bonus up to CHF 220

Wazamba: Bonus up to CHF 220

Spinanga: Bonus up to CHF 220

Swiss Betting Sites FAQs

All of the information you need regarding betting sites in Switzerland can be found on this page. If you prefer the quick version, just read these FAQs.

Is online betting legal in Switzerland?

Yes, online betting is legal in Switzerland, but international betting sites are not.

In June 2018, 73% of voters said yes to the new 'Gambling Act' which meant that the Swiss government could block foreign betting sites.

However, while there is no law forbidding Swiss residents to place bets with offshore bookmakers, the government has made it more difficult in recent years.

Because of that, it is not uncommon for Swiss bettors to use a VPN as a workaround, but this is not necessarily something we recommend.

Which betting sites accept Swiss players?

Despite the laws in Switzerland, many international bookmakers allow Swiss residents to sign up, including:

Can I use CHF on betting sites?

It depends on the bookmaker.

Some betting sites have a welcome bonus in Swiss francs and allow you to deposit in that currency and play with it from then on, whereas others accept the Euro or US dollars even.

If the bookie doesn't have Swiss francs, you'll likely just have to play with Euros, which shouldn't be too much of a problem for Swiss players.

How can I deposit on Swiss betting sites?

You can use Visa or MasterCard on pretty much all online betting sites, but some also offer Skrill, Neteller, Bitcoin, PayPal, paysafecard, ecoPayz, and plenty of other options.

Can I trust online betting sites?

If the bookmaker is listed on this page, that means they hold a licence from at least one country. Since launching Bookies Bonuses in 2009, we have only ever listed betting sites we have tried and are comfortable with.

You can also check out our individual reviews of each bookmaker and see our opinion of it.

How do I claim a welcome bonus?

Fortunately, betting sites make it very easy to claim their sign-up offer when you register.

Simply click one of the 'Claim' buttons in the lists on this page and follow the steps outlined on the page you land on.

Best betting sites Switzerland compared

As a Swiss resident, you have plenty of betting options!

You have access to Bet365 and 22bet, both of which have a huge global presence, or alternatively, you can opt for a bookmaker like Wettigo, Sportaza, or Bahigo, where the Swiss market is a bigger priority.

We could make a case for any of the Swiss betting sites on our list, and that's why we've highlighted their unique selling points so that you can make an informed decision.

5 Best Football Betting Sites in Switzerland

Football is extremely popular around the world and Switzerland is no exception. While you might not see people going to a bar to watch a match and bet on it too often, many fans still like to follow both big and small leagues.

When it comes to betting on football, there are a few things you may want to look for in a betting site when choosing it:

  • Does it have many betting outcomes you can select?
  • Are the odds better than the competition?
  • Does the betting site cover the leagues you want to bet on?
  • Does the bookmaker allow you to bet on live games?
To save you the trouble of checking all of the sites to find the answers, here are our TOP 5 FOOTBALL BETTING SITES in Switzerland that have great features.

#1 Betting Site for Football – 22Bet Switzerland

22Bet should receive an award for how many markets it operates in. It is very popular amongst players across the world and accepts players not only from Switzerland but also from other European countries.

This betting site is renowned for the sheer volume of football matches it covers, the competitive odds it offers and the live streams it gives access to. Its coverage of Swiss football is particularly impressive, making it one of the best Swiss Super League betting sites.

Although the site navigation is generally user-friendly, it could benefit from some minor improvements. However, once you get the hang of it, finding any match or league, from mainstream to niche, only takes 2-3 clicks.

Another great advantage of 22Bet is that they have a mobile app, that is ready to install with a link directly on their website.

Last but not least, 22Bet has a neat welcome bonus that you can use on football and other sports, with acceptable play-through requirements.

#2 Betting Site for Football – Bet365 Switzerland

When we talk about football betting sites, Bet365 will always be present on the list, no matter what. That is because of their global presence and their breadth of market coverage.

Bet365, doesn't have the highest odds, but they are consistently high, which is very important when looking for a betting site. Their usual payout margin is about 95%, which only a few bookmakers can top, and not even for all matches or leagues.

Bet365 offers live streams on many matches, with many interesting betting markets, such as team performance, shots on target, penalties, and more.

The Bet365 welcome offer has one of the lowest and fairest requirements on the Swiss betting sites market, so it's always worth picking it up.

#3 Betting Site for Football – Sportaza Switzerland

Sportaza is one of the first Swiss sites I have used and it left me with quite a good impression.

Their football markets are very comprehensive and with lots of options.

I wish they offered a betting app, but I also never felt like it was that big of a disadvantage not using it.

I like that Sportaza supports super fast withdrawals through e-wallets, as sometimes I just didn't want to wait a lot.

It is worth mentioning that the bookie also has a superb customer support team, which is very helpful.

With a great welcome offer and tons of football markets and major league coverage, it can be a sure choice for anyone looking to bet on football on the go.

#4 Betting Site for Football – PlayZilla Switzerland

PlayZilla has one of the most user-centric interfaces out there, which makes it fantastic for placing quick football bets. From the get-go you are asked to choose your language - English or German.

Then the main page loads, and you are greeted with a nice colour scheme, that's easy on the eyes, and a predictive selection of football matches that you might be interested in.

PlayZilla is an excellent choice for its many betting markets and payment options, of which there are plenty.

The welcome bonus is also higher than the usual 100 CHF, but it comes with a bit tougher wagering requirements.

#5 Betting Site for Football – Rabona Switzerland

Rabona made it in the top 5 list because of the large number of football leagues they cover.

With a slick sportsbook design and many great features, it's no wonder why Rabona is very popular in Germany, Canada, and India.

The bookmaker focuses heavily on football and tries to cater to every type of player out there.

To accommodate different needs they try and offer a lot of payment methods, including crypto currencies.

The downside of Rabona is the lack of a mobile app, but the upside is that the mobile version of the website is very well-optimised and runs smoothly.

To top it off, the betting site comes with one of the higher offers from this list, making it an easy choice.

Betting apps Switzerland

Can I download betting apps in Switzerland?

Yes, it takes some extra effort, but it's totally worth it.

Here is how you can download betting apps in Switzerland when they are not available in the Play Store and the App Store:

How to Choose a Sports Betting Site?

Compare swiss betting sites

We compare Swiss betting sites and tell you what you should look for

There are always country-specific factors to consider when choosing a betting site, and Switzerland is no exception. Normally, these include betting variety, payment methods, currencies, and bonus offers.

Some betting sites may offer the best odds or the nicest interface, but that's no good if they don't offer your preferred banking option or have a site that is not optimised for your preferred device.

1. AVAILABILITY

This is the most important factor. If the betting site doesn't allow Swiss citizens to register, then it is of absolutely no use.

All of the betting sites listed on this page are available to people from Switzerland.

2. BETTING OFFERS

Swiss players can often enjoy generous welcome offers, in a similar fashion to other European players.

There are two main types of welcome offers: either a deposit bonus or free bets.

Both can be beneficial, but deposit bonuses require a bit more effort because of the turnover requirements.

💰 How deposit bonuses work

A deposit bonus is exactly what it sounds like: a bonus that you receive after making your first deposit on a betting site.

Most offers of this kind in Switzerland are matched deposit bonuses, meaning you get a 100% bonus when you make your deposit.

So, if a bookmaker is promoting a deposit bonus worth 100% up to CHF400, that means that if you deposit CHF400, you will receive CHF400 and if you only deposit 20 CHF you will get 20 as a bonus.

That bonus money is not yours to withdraw straight away, though.

The wagering requirements will indicate how many times you need to turn that money over before it becomes withdrawable as cash.

💸 How free bets work

Nine times out of 10, free bet welcome offers are the most straightforward.

You usually just need to place a bet that meets the specified requirements (minimum odds, eligible markets, number of selections) and you will then receive a free bet upon settlement of your qualifying bet.

Normally, these bonuses are smaller in value, but still arguably better overall because of the lack of wagering requirements.

🔄 What are wagering requirements

We've mentioned wagering requirements quite a few times on this page, but if you are unsure of what they mean pay attention.

Also known as turnover, rollover, or playthrough, wagering requirements ask of you to keep spending the bonus amount until you reach a certain total "sum".

For example, if you claim the Sportaza bonus and deposit 200 CHF you will receive 200 as bonus money.

Then you will have to play through the (deposit + bonus) amount 5 times, meaning 2000 CHF in total at minimum odds of 1.50, before you are allowed to withdraw your winnings.

- But how can you bet 2000 if you only have 200 deposit + 200 bonus?

- By betting, winning and betting what you won again, until the amount you have bet with your account since opening it reaches 2000.

3. PAYMENT METHODS

The most common payment methods in Switzerland are Visa and MasterCard, but PayPal is now in the mix, as well as other eWallets or even prepaid cards such as Paysafecard.

In countries with similar legislation to Switzerland, for example in Norway, the authorities have made it illegal for banks to transfer funds between private citizens and iGaming (betting sites and casinos) operators. This means that credit cards issued by the bank, or direct bank transfers are hard to use for transactions. Luckily, this is not yet the case in Switzerland as payment blocking is not allowed under the Swiss Gaming Act.

However, we would still advise you to use an electronic wallet such as Skrill and Neteller, or prepaid cards like Paysafecard and Jeton, to be on the safe side.

4. CHF DEPOSITS

This might be an important factor for some Swiss players, and there are some bookies that offer deposits in CHF.

But seeing as all other betting sites should at least allow you to play in Euros, this shouldn't matter too much.

Even though many betting sites are wary of causing incidents with the Swiss authorities, they often allow deposits and offer welcome offers in Swiss francs.

5. MOBILE BETTING

Betting via mobile has increased in popularity in recent years and it's no surprise that most top bookmakers are placing a lot of emphasis on their mobile offering.

Many do that in the shape of an app for iOS and Android, but some bookmakers still have a well-optimised mobile product even without an app.

6. LANGUAGES

Most international betting sites offer several language options to their players, and German, Italian, French, English, and Portuguese are available in many cases.

Find out more in your language

Through the below links, you can learn about Swiss betting sites in your preferred language.

7. CUSTOMER SUPPORT

Ideally, each bookmaker would have 24/7 live chat and a telephone support option, but sadly this isn't always the case, especially with less established bookies.

You also want customer support in your first language, which again, is not universally offered.

How to Bet Online in Switzerland

The process of betting online as a Swiss player is pretty straightforward. Of course, the barriers enforced as a result of the Gambling Act of 2019 have caused difficulties, but you still have many options.

1

CHOOSE A BOOKMAKER

On this page, there are plenty of online betting sites that you can pick from as a Swiss player.

We have broken down the pros and cons of each bookmaker so that you can make your own mind up as to which one suits you best.

If in doubt, you can't go wrong with simply picking the one with the biggest bonus!

When you've decided which one you want to register with, simply click the 'Claim' button and you will be taken straight to where you need to be.

2

SET UP AN ACCOUNT

When making your account, you will need to provide the following details:

  • Name
  • Nationality
  • Date of birth
  • Email address
  • Address
  • Username/password

Other details may also be required, and once this has been done, you can go ahead and claim the bonus/make a deposit.

NOTE: At this point, you might need a VPN if you are not already outside of Switzerland.

3

MAKE A DEPOSIT

You can use your Visa or MasterCard, but on many betting sites there is also the option to use PayPal or eWallets, such as Neteller or Skrill.

Prepaid cards such as paysafecard are commonly seen among online bookmakers now, and even cryptocurrencies have begun to surface.

  • The CHF (€) is accepted by some, but not all online betting sites.
  • Your minimum deposit amount is likely to be CHF10 or €10.
  • Transactions should not incur a charge, but this can depend on the payment provider.
4

PLACE YOUR BETS

This is the fun bit!

Once your account is loaded with funds and perhaps with a bonus under your belt as well, you can lock in your wagers.

Such has been the development of online betting sites in recent years, there are thousands of markets available every day, and tons of different bet types.

You can wager on everything from Swiss Super League football to Czech women's volleyball.

TIP: Odds will vary across each betting site, so if you are registered with more than one, always bet on the one with the best odds!

5

MAKE A WITHDRAWAL

Before making a withdrawal, you will likely have to verify your identity. The process normally includes you sending in copies or scans of documents like your ID and a utility bill.

These are sent to customer support or uploaded to the site. Once documents have been approved, funds can be withdrawn.

The reason for this is that bookmakers must adhere to laws regarding money laundering. They must be sure that they send money to the correct person.

In some instances, fees are added to the withdrawal, but this is not the case with all betting sites and payment providers.

Online Sports betting in Switzerland 101

Is online sports betting legal in Switzerland?

Yes, it is. The act of betting on sports online has been legalised for the state-owned sites, but international betting sites have not been granted official permission to offer any gambling services to Swiss residents.

It's important to note that while Switzerland prohibits foreign bookmakers from offering their services in the country, individual bettors don't face criminal prosecution for their gambling activities.

Moreover, payment blocking is not enforced under the Gaming Act, allowing Swiss punters to continue accessing internationally licenced sports betting sites.

The history of sports betting in Switzerland

Prior to 2019, sports betting was technically illegal in Switzerland, although many people still managed to find ways to engage in it. This created a grey area in which numerous international bookmakers offered sports betting services to Swiss bettors.

Recognising that Swiss residents were spending substantial sums on betting abroad, politicians decided to finally legalise online sports betting in the country. In 2019, a new Gaming Act was introduced, marking the first time that sports betting became legal in Switzerland.

The primary goals of the new Gaming Act include protection against gambling addiction and allocating portion of gambling revenue for public welfare.

While there are no laws explicitly prohibiting Swiss residents from betting with international bookmakers, the government has taken significant steps to deter such activities. This includes the use of internet blockers to limit access to foreign sportsbooks. Nevertheless, Swiss bettors continue to engage with internationally licenced platforms that welcome players from Switzerland.

Why use international betting sites?

Local, state-owned betting sites often have fewer sports options, worse odds, and no welcome bonuses.

On the other hand, many international betting sites, for example big names such as bet365 and 22bet, accept players who reside in Switzerland and offer them generous sign-up bonuses.

If you decide to bet with betting sites based abroad, you will likely have more betting options, enticing bonuses and promotions, and exciting functions such as "bet builder", "cash out" and livestreaming, which make for a better playing experience overall.

Final Verdict

Stan's take and recommendations

Stan Miller

Stan Miller

I believe the future is looking bright for Swiss bettors.

Eventually I hope regulations are set in place that do not discourage, but rather allow for healthy competition in the betting sphere.

Other countries such as Germany, Netherlands and so on have managed to strike a healthy balance of keeping their citizens' funds within the boarders by having proper taxation, that does not totally eliminate the purpose of running a business.

As for my recommendations, I am a big fan of Wettigo for their welcome offer, Sportaza for their abundance of sport options and PlayZilla for the mix of a great sportsbook and nice website interface.

Ben's recommendations

On this page, you've been shown all of the best bookmakers that are available to Swiss players, and hopefully, you understand the regulations around online betting in Switzerland.

So, if you're still keen to register with a Swiss betting site and start placing wagers, I suggest you take on board the points we have mentioned for each betting site and make your decision based on that.

22bet, Wettigo, and Bet365 are all towards the top of our list and with good reason.

To be honest, you can't go wrong with any of those. My personal favourite is Bet365 - but that's coming from someone who wants to bet at a more advanced level.

When I'm looking to take a more casual approach, I would side with Sportaza, who put Swiss players at the forefront of their priorities.
