Facts about Formula 1
Formula 1 was driven for the first time in 1948, although the first world championship lap would have to wait for two more years. Nowadays, all the competitions are part of the championship, which is called FIA Formula One World Championship. Single seater cars are driven on either purposebuilt circuits or closed off city tracks. The world championship takes place every year, and it's been that way since 1950. A Formula 1 competition runs from Friday through Sunday. During the Friday and the Saturday morning the drivers are given time to test drive. On the Saturday afternoon the qualification starts; this consists of 3 sessions with a 5 minute break in each. Then the competition starts on the Sunday, usually at 1 pm GMT. It commences with a formation lap where the drivers line up according to how they qualified. A Formula 1 race usually reaches over 300 kilometers, but 2 hours can also be a cut off point. The combination of high speeds and light cars makes Formula 1 a high risk sport, so naturally the race is controlled by a lot of rules. A penalty is given to any driver that causes a collision, ignores a blue flag at 3 occasions or exceeds the speed limit at the depot area. A safety car, or a virtual safety car is used if accidents occur, to make sure any further accidents are avoided. A lot of high profile drivers have emerged over the years in the Formula 1 circuit. Some of them are; Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Juan Manuel Fangio, Alain Prost, Niki Lauda, Mika Häkkinen and of course Ronnie Peterson. Michael Schumacher is considered by most to be the best driver in the history of the sport. He won as early as 1994 and 1995, and he then proceeded to win five championships in a row between 2000 and 2004.
