Southampton have brought Mauricio Pellegrino back to the Premier League this season in an attempt to inject some spark back into a talented squad.
Not all that much has happened in the transfer window, with just one signing so far; a promising young Polish defender who joins the Saints from Lech Poznan for £5.10 million. Quite a few players have been released or loaned out and striker Jay Rodriguez has departed for West Brom for £11.6 million.
The Van Dijk transfer saga rumbles on, with the 26 year old defender now apparently refusing to play, after the Reds have had their previous bids rejected and are now willing to pay £60 million. Skybet currently have the Dutchman to move to Liverpool at 2/9 (Skybet), 8/13 (William Hill), 2/5 (Betfred), 1/4 (BetVictor) and 2/9 (Paddy Power).
So how do the bookies see them performing this season?
Well winning the league looks unlikely with odds of 250/1, but so does relegation with odds being offered of between 18/1 and 25/1.
A top-four finish looks likely with Betstars, William Hill and Bwin offering 8/15; Paddy Power 8/13, while Betfred and Betway are offering 4/6.
Southampton to finish higher than Leicester is offered at: 11/8 by Ladbrokes and 5/6 by Betfair. To finish higher than West Ham is being offered at: 2/5 and 5/6 by the same two bookies. Higher than Everton is 13/8 and 7/2, whilst to finish higher than Liverpool is just being offered by Betfair at 14/1.
The first game of the season at home to West Ham is looking to be a close one, with odds of 5/6 and 4/5 being offered by the bookies.
