The US Open has a rich history which goes all the way back to 1881 when the first men's tournament was played. The female equivalent was held in 1887. To start with the tournament was called the US Lawn Tennis Championship, and at the time it was only open to players connected to the US National Lawn Tennis Association. At that time the tournament was played on grass courts at the Newport Casino on Rhode Island.
Over the years, up until 1978 it was played on different courts, including Chestnut Hill. But it was then switched to hard courts at Flushing Meadows. Ten years prior to this, the tournament had been opened to amateur players, and it was then held at Forest Hill.
Flushing Meadows really gave the tournament a lift, with its 25 newly built courts. The center court, called the Arthur Ashe Stadium could hold more than 20 000 spectators. The center court was the perfect venue in every way to watch a tournament like the US Open.
On the men’s side a very prominent player is Roger Federer with his five consecutive victories, from 2004 to 2008. On the women’s side the Williams sisters been very successful. Serena Williams won the title three years in a row from 2013 to 2015. Men’s and women’s double, along with mixed double is also played at the US Open.
