Facts about WTA Tennis

It is the Women’s Tennis association that organise the WTA tour which is the equivalent of the ATP for men. The organisation’s main task is to promote women’s tennis and is therefore not primarily focused on the winning aspect. The tour results are reflected in the ranking which is hugely important to the players. The tennisace Billie Jean King founded the WTA in 1973. A huge company in the form of Philip Morris sponsored the activity surrounding the tournament up until 1994, and this was the reason behind the cigarette brand Virginia Slims Circuit, which was a brand owned by the company. Since 2005, the tournaments go under the name the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. The WTA tour consist of more than 60 tournaments where more than 1400 players from 80 different countries compete. The Grand Slam Tournaments is a part of the WTA tour, so is also the WTA Tour Championships. The interest for the tour, with it’s millions of spectators and tvviewers, is a testament to the strong position that women’s tennis hold in the world of sports.
