Betting On GTA VI's Release!

GTA VI: A Behemoth Awaits

Lets be under no illusion here, Grand Theft Auto VI will be a huge release, arguably the biggest release in videogame history when Rockstar Games deem it to be ready.

The original trailer shown below has over 260+ million hits since its first release in December 2023 and with millions of fans desperate for any morsel of information about the game, the hype train has continued at frightening pace.

With hype comes inaccuracy or, at very least, wishful thinking. Such is the power of the Grand Theft Auto universe, even the gambling industry has found itself in the comfy, first-class seat of the hype train, looking to garner some attention and a few new customers too.

"I am fully aware of my hypocrisy by the way, so please refrain from sending arrows to the knee"

I wanted to clear up things as the recent release delay has brought a few articles back to my feed, including the Hindustan Times, Yahoo Finance and a couple of pieces from fellow affiliate companies.

So, Can I Bet On GTA VI Specials/Novelty Markets

You can bet on pretty much anything, just Not GTA VI

The Short Answer: NO -  The Longer Answer: Sort Of!

As it stands, there are no specials or novelty markets regarding GTA VI and its release on any UK betting site, despite speculation or inference to the contrary.

This is the same in the United States, too, with multiple articles over the last couple of months stating that "xyz" betting site had prop bets available, yet oddly, on each visit via VPN, they were nowhere to be found on the site.

But You Did Say Sort Of, Didn't You?

I did, and this is where it gets a little muddy shall we say. American site, Polymarket (unlicensed in the UK) is a cryptocurrency-based prediction site that literally allows bets on pretty much anything, including release windows of videogames and more.

The majority of these "predictions" are Over/Under or Yes/No style, including the below GTA VI market.

GTA VI Polymarket

Polymarket technically allows betting on the GTA VI release but not for UK punters.

Anti-Trust Issues?

One other issue to consider is the potential for information (leaked or otherwise) to be used on such markets.

We have already seen the UK Gambling Commission prosecute 15 Conservative MPs who bet on the date of the General Election before the official announcement, thanks to having prior knowledge, so it is feasible that something similar could occur.

The problem would then stem from proving such behaviour, and would cause further legal issues for the companies involved on both sides.

My Opinion

The gravitational pull of the GTA VI phenomenon is so powerful that completely unrelated industries, such as the gambling industry, are being seduced by its seemingly endless influence in mainstream media.

I'm on the fence about how this will affect punters. On one hand, attracting new audiences and continuing the push to be mainstream is great, but on the flipside, discussing non-existent markets as fact is pure clickbait and could well put punters off.
