Is online betting legal in Ireland?
Yes, online sports betting has been legal in Ireland for a long time. But the rules governing how betting is regulated have just gone through their biggest overhaul in almost a century.
For decades, Irish gambling was regulated under a patchwork of laws dating back to the 1920s and 30s, long before online betting even existed. That changed with the Gambling Regulation Act 2024, which introduced a single new regulator and a modern licensing system built for how people actually bet today.
In short: if you’re 18 or over, you can legally bet online in Ireland — but you should make sure you’re using a bookmaker licensed by the GRAI.
So, what changed in 2026?
The Gambling Regulation Act 2024 established the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI), which replaced the previous Revenue-led licensing regime.
Since 1 July 2026, any company offering sports betting to customers in Ireland must hold a licence from the GRAI, and the regulator has real enforcement power that its predecessor lacked.
Not every operator that held a Revenue Commissioners licence has moved across to the new system yet, so the Irish betting market looks a little different from before the changeover. That’s why it’s important to check a bookmaker’s current GRAI status rather than assuming it is still licensed simply because it operated in Ireland before July 2026.
For most bettors, the day-to-day won't feel that different. You'll still find the same sports, markets, and familiar betting features. The more significant changes are in what operators are required to do behind the scenes.
These include restrictions on credit-card gambling, stricter age and identity checks, and tighter rules around bonuses, promotions and VIP schemes. A National Gambling Exclusion Register is also being introduced, with the aim of eventually allowing one self-exclusion request to apply across licensed operators.
Before opening an account, here are a few things worth knowing.
- You must be at least 18 to gamble in Ireland.
- Online betting is legal as long as you choose a bookmaker that's licensed in Ireland.
- You'll need to verify your identity before you can fully use your account.
- Even existing customers may need to complete new identity checks.
- Credit cards can no longer be used for deposits.
- Bonuses and VIP programmes are more tightly regulated than before.
- A National Gambling Exclusion Register is being introduced to make self-exclusion easier across licensed operators.
All licensed Irish betting sites
Ireland's new gambling licensing system came into effect on 1 July 2026, when the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) began issuing licences. As of now, 24 licences have been issued, and that number is expected to keep growing as more applications are processed.
Below is a list of every operator that previously held a Remote Bookmaker's Licence from the Revenue Commissioners, showing which of them have since secured a new GRAI licence.

Responsible gambling in Ireland
For most people, betting is just another way to make a match or race more exciting. But for some people, it can become difficult to control their gambling habits and it can start affecting other parts of their lives.
In fact, the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) estimates that around 1 in 30 adults in Ireland experience problem gambling. That's why reducing gambling-related harm is one of the main goals of Ireland's new gambling regulations, which require licensed operators to provide clearer information, safer gambling tools, and better support for players.
Problem gambling isn't only about how often you bet or how much you spend. It's about whether gambling is having a negative impact on your life.
That could mean spending more money or time than you can afford, struggling to stop, or finding that betting is affecting your finances, work, relationships, or mental wellbeing.
Some common warning signs include:
- Finding it difficult to stop playing
- Betting more than you can comfortably afford to lose
- Chasing losses
- Feeling guilty or worried about your betting
- Borrowing money to gamble
- Hiding your gambling from family or friends
- Reliving and romanticising gambling experiences
- Gambling to escape stress, anxiety, boredom, or other negative emotions
If several of those sound familiar, it may be worth taking a break and reaching out for support.
Tools to help you stay in control
Every licensed betting site in Ireland must offer responsible gambling tools to help players stay in control. These generally include:
- Deposit limits
- Time-out periods
- Self-exclusion
- Reality checks and time reminders
- Activity and transaction history
- Self-assessment questionnaires
And if you'd like to assess your own gambling habits, the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) offers an anonymous Problem Gambling Severity Index (PSGI) questionnaire, which provides an instant assessment based on your answers.
If you think gambling is affecting your finances, work, family life, or mental wellbeing, support services are available nationwide to help you.
