Why Has Apple Pay Become So Popular

Apple Pay has become a mainstream payment function for millions of users worldwide, thanks to its simplicity. Any person with a compatible Apple product (iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch or Mac) and a debit card connected to their Apple ID can access quick, safe and secure payments across businesses worldwide, both in-person and online.

Making a payment is as simple as using your Touch ID or Face ID to confirm a transaction.

With the popularity of the service, it stands to reason that online bookmakers and casino providers have added this to their list of allowable payment methods for players.

In bookmakers' eyes, Apple Pay is considered to be an e-wallet, and similar to other e-wallets, such as Paypal, Neteller or Skrill, no card details are directly shared with the bookmaker, enhancing a player's security when visiting the online site.

Claiming Welcome Offers With Apple Pay

When it comes to depositing funds, online bookmakers are required by law to make sure that money associated with the account is coming from the correct source, i.e. the account holder themselves.

This can make things tricky for third-party e-wallet users especially, with many bookmakers not allowing the likes of Neteller or Skrill users to claim a sign-up bonus, with verification requirements needing to be met further down the line.

With the verification process for Apple Pay being very strict, this will, for the most part, satisfy online bookmakers' security requirements when it comes to payments, which makes depositing a little easier for players.

As big brand bookmakers begin to accept Apple Pay for deposit bonuses, more will eventually follow

Some bookmakers are starting to allow new customers to take advantage of sign-up bonuses with Apple Pay, but for the most part, bookmakers still prefer new customers to make a first deposit via a debit card. Users can then freely switch their payment method to Apple Pay afterwards.

It isn't ideal, but with the likes of bet365 and Sky Bet already allowing new sign-up bonuses to be claimed by Apple Pay users, it's only a matter of time before more betting operators follow suit.

Always remember, if you are not 100% sure about a promotion's T&Cs, most bookmakers have webchat available to answer any further inquiries.

Deposits And Withdrawals Via Apple Pay

  • MAKING DEPOSITS

Depositing funds with Apple Pay is extremely straightforward when using an online bookmaker.

  1. On your iOS device, when asked for the payment method, choose Apple Pay.
  2. Select the amount you want to transfer and which card you want to use.
  3. Accept the transaction with touch or face ID and you are done. Simple and quick
  • MAKING WITHDRAWALS

Unfortunately, players cannot withdraw funds directly to an Apple Pay account, with the majority of bookmakers requiring an alternative debit/bank card to be added.

However, bookmakers such as Betfair and Paddy Power have started to allow players to process withdrawals via Apple Pay, albeit with money automatically returning to the original source, which is the debit/bank card attributed to the Apple Pay service.

This is not ideal, as it does leave players having to still provide some banking information to the bookmaker. Hopefully, this can be addressed at some time in the future by Apple Pay itself.

What is Apple Pay?

Apple Pay was first introduced in 2014, as Apple wanted to make online payments easier. In recent years it has also been upgraded to include contactless payments at physical shops, transport networks and more

In essence, what it does is make your credit/debit card digital. Instead of the physical card, your iPhone acts as the card. And instead of the pin code, you verify transactions with your fingerprint or face ID.

FAQ

Can I claim a welcome offer with an Apple Pay deposit?

Unfortunately, the majority of sign-up and deposit bonuses for new customers have to be claimed with a standard debit/bank card to qualify.

Apple Pay Is classed as an e-wallet and is treated in much the same way as Neteller or Skrill by most bookmakers, with a couple of exceptions: bet365 and Sky Bet

Players who wish to receive a deposit bonus with either of those bookmakers, can sign-up normally and make their first deposit with Apple Pay, so long as they have a debit/bank card registered to the service.

What betting sites accept Apple Pay?

Although the list is growing, the majority of bookmakers that allow Apple Pay to be used are usually the bigger brands, with some of these listed below:

  • bet365
  • Sky Bet
  • BetVictor
  • Betfred
  • Coral
  • William Hill
  • Betfair
  • Paddy Power
  • Unibet
  • Parimatch
  • Virgin Bet.

Only bet365 and Sky Bet currently allow new customers to claim their deposit bonus via Apple Pay, with other bookmakers' sign-up bonuses having to be claimed via another payment method to qualify.

Can I use a credit card with Apple Pay?

No, by law, bookmakers in the UK are not allowed to accept payments via credit card in any circumstances and this has been the case since April 2020.

Can I withdraw money via Apple Pay?

Unfortunately, customers cannot withdraw winnings to their Apple Pay account directly. Players who wish to make a withdrawal of money from their account must use an alternative banking option to do this.

In the case of Betfair and Paddy Power, players can process withdrawals via Apple Pay, but any withdrawals still go to a debit/bank card attributed to the Apple Pay service.

This is one of the minor irritations that comes with Apple Pay and hopefully will change in the future.

Does Apple Pay charge fees on deposits?

No, Apple Pay does not charge fees for deposits made to online bookmakers.

Is there a minimum / maximum deposit limit with Apple Pay?

Apple Pay does not set limits on the amount of money able to be deposited via its service, however, online bookmakers have their own requirements, with some offering deposits as low as £5.

What is the main advantage of Apple Pay for online betting?

The main advantages of Apple Pay are simplicity and security. If you have Apple Pay set up on your Apple device you are just one fingerprint or face identification away from depositing money.

Apple Pay acts as a third-party e-wallet, so any personal information or bank details are extremely limited and are never shared directly with the online bookmaker, meaning payments are very secure.
