Valspar Championship - Boyle Sports Boosts
The Valspar Championship
Tournament Preview
After last week's Players' Championship, the tour heads to the north of St. Petersburg, Florida for the Valspar Championship at the famous Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort.
The Copperhead Course plays to a par of 71, at over 7,340 yards, and is famous for a tough final three holes, known as the Snake-Pit. It ranks as the seventh toughest course on the PGA Tour.
The course was designed and built by Larry Packard in 1972, and was renovated in 2015. it features tight fairways and undulating greens.
The record score at the course is a -10 under par round of 61, by Padraig Harrington in 2012, with Mike NeSmith equalling the score ten years later.
135 players take part in this event, with the regular cut coming at the end of the second round on Friday. As always, Boyle Sports are offering 10 PLACES on the event, with a further 12 places available via "Pick Your Place".
The defending champion is Viktor Hovland (14/1), who beat Justin Thomas by a stroke in last years event. The Norwegian has been a marker of consistency since that win, making every cut since. Three Top 15 finishes in the last five tournaments, including successive T13's suggests he will be in the mix once again.
Xander Schauffele (9/1) is the favourite, thanks to the absence of several top stars, but its no-less deserved based on recent performances, which has seen two Top 10s including a T3 at The Players' Championship last week. Loves this course, having averaged 69 per round in three visits. Potentially, the "horse for the course" this week.
Matt Fitzpatrick (11/1) will shrug off the disappointment of last week's near miss at The Players' and look to continue his excellent form which saw him rank top in Fairways Hit and Total Driving at Sawgrass. Ranks 7th in Birdie Average and 15th in GIR, which if combined will put him right in the mix.
Akshay Bhatia (16/1) sits just behind the defending champion in the betting, and has really come on leaps and bounds after an initially slow start. He has finished 16th or higher in his last five events, including the victory at the Arnold Palmer and a T13 last week. Top 20 last year and more of the same would be of little surprise.
Justin Thomas (16/1) will look to go one better, after missing out last year, but of course much has happened since then, with injury and surgery seeing him miss a chunk of golf. An excellent T8 will have boosted confidence, although it remains to be seen how he fairs with extended play, with this being his third successive week of play.
Remaining Top 10 In The Betting:
- Jacon Bridgeman - 18/1
- Patrick Cantlay - 18/1
- Brooks Koepka - 20/1
- Jordan Spieth - 22/1
- Ryo Hisatsune - 22/1
- Sahith Theegala - 22/1
- 25/1 Bar
