All Substitution Guarantee (SubSafe) Offers in the Netherlands
Subbed Off? Your Bet Can Still Win!
SubSafe is a relatively new feature in the Netherlands that keeps your goalscorer bet alive even if your selected player is substituted before finding the net.
Normally, once your player is taken off without scoring, your bet is lost. With SubSafe, your selection carries over to the player who replaces him. If that substitute scores later in the match, your original bet still wins.
The feature has been available in countries like the UK for years, but it's still relatively new to Dutch bettors, with only a handful of betting sites offering it.
Which betting sites offer SubSafe in the Netherlands?
One slightly confusing thing about SubSafe is that almost every bookmaker seems to have its own name for it.
You'll find it listed as Golden Sub, SuperSub, Smart Switch, Sub On Play On, and a few other variations.
The basic idea is always similar, but the exact rules can differ depending on where you place your bet.
We checked all 22 licensed betting sites in the Netherlands to see which bookmakers currently offer this promotion.
At the time of writing, we found seven bookmakers offering some form of substitution guarantee: VBet, bet365, Unibet, Circus, TOTO, 711 and BetCity.

There are a few important differences between bookmakers:
- Circus only covers the first replacement. If that substitute is also taken off, your bet won't transfer to another player.
- Bet365, TOTO, VBET, and 711 allow your selection to follow another substitute if the first replacement is also taken off.
Another difference is the range of markets covered. Some bookmakers focus mainly on goalscorer bets, while others include shots, assists, and other player statistics.
How does Sub Safe work?
Let's say you've backed Haaland to score at any time.
He starts the match, gets a few chances, but after an hour he is substituted without scoring.
Normally, your bet would lose. Once the player you've backed leaves the pitch, they obviously no longer have a chance to score.
However, with SubSafe, your bet continues and the bookmaker transfers your bet to the player who comes on as Haaland's replacement. If that player scores later in the match, your original bet is settled as a winner.
So instead of your bet ending when your player is taken off, you still have a chance of winning through his replacement.
Which betting markets are usually included?
SubSafe is usually available on the most popular goalscorer markets, including:
- Anytime Goalscorer
- First Goalscorer
- Last Goalscorer
However, some bookmakers have extended substitution coverage to other player markets.
At bet365, for example, Sub On Play On also covers selected markets for assists, shots, tackles, and goalkeeper saves.
Circus offers SuperSub on several player-statistics markets, while TOTO's Gouden Wissel covers eligible Player to Score and Player Shots on Target selections. VBET also offers it on players to score two or more goals.
Why is SubSafe not available at more Dutch betting sites?
Substitution guarantees are much more common in the UK than in the Netherlands, where the regulated online gambling market only opened in October 2021.
Dutch bookmakers also operate under stricter rules around bonuses, advertising, and gambling promotions.
That doesn't mean these rules are directly stopping bookmakers from introducing SubSafe. However, it does help explain why the Dutch betting market has developed differently.
However, in recent years, we've also seen other betting features appear at Dutch sportsbooks, including 2UP Early Payout and ScoreUP.
Unlike SubSafe, 2UP and ScoreUP focus on match-winner bets. With 2UP, your selection wins if your team goes two goals ahead, while ScoreUP settles your bet as a winner if your chosen player scores the opening goal.

Yes. Different bookmakers use different names, but they all refer to a feature that transfers your goalscorer bet to the replacement player after a substitution.
